Saint Mary Magdalene
Vespers

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Antiphon 1 When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus, alleluia.

Psalm 109 (110)    Dixit Dominus
The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.

“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”

The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.

He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.

He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus, alleluia.

Antiphon 2 Mary bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting, alleluia.

Psalm 112 (113)    Laudate, pueri
Alleluia!

Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.
Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?

He takes up the weak out of the dust
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
He sets them with the princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the woman of a childless house
to be a joyful mother of children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Mary bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting, alleluia.

Antiphon 3 My heart is burning, I want to see my Lord, I am looking, but I cannot find where they have laid him, alleluia.

Psalm 121 (122)    Laetatus sum
I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city
that is at unity with itself;

To which the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord,
the assembly of Israel,
to praise the Name of the Lord.

For there are the thrones of judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls
and quietness within your towers.

“For my brethren and companions’ sake,
I pray for your prosperity.
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek to do you good.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon My heart is burning, I want to see my Lord, I am looking, but I cannot find where they have laid him, alleluia.

Antiphon 4 Jesus said to her: Mary! She turned and said to him Rabbouni! which means Teacher.

Psalm 126 (127)    Nisi Dominus
Unless the Lord builds the house,
their labor is in vain who build it.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
in vain the watchman keeps his vigil.

It is in vain that you rise so early and go to bed so late;
vain, too, to eat the bread of toil,
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
and the fruit of the womb is a gift.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.

Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them!
he shall not be put to shame
when he contends with his enemies in the gate.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Jesus said to her: Mary! She turned and said to him Rabbouni! which means Teacher.

Short Lesson: Romans 8:28-30
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

Responsory
You speak in my heart and say: seek my face.
You speak in my heart and say: seek my face.
Your face, Lord, will I seek. Seek my face.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
You speak in my heart and say: seek my face.

Hymn     Magdalae sidus
O blessed woman, O star of Magdala,
with holy reverence, we all venerate you,
whom Christ united to himself with strong bonds
of eternal love.

Then when he revealed to you all his power,
driving away fear, the forces of demons,
you in stronger faith, rejoice in your new bond,
thanks to the healer.

Now the force of love, urges you on the way
to follow the feet, of this, your new master,
fired up for him, always his companion,
zealous in your care.

And you pour your tears, standing by the cross now,
for your Lord so dear, struck by burning mercy,
anxiously you wash his limbs and anoint them,
given to the grave.

Make us companions, of those whom love of Christ
has given birth, joined in triumph for ever,
and pour forth as one our abundant praises,
to the Beloved. Amen.

Verse
Mary, weep no longer.
The Lord is risen from the dead.

Antiphon Mary went and announced to the disciples: I have seen the Lord, alleluia.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Mary went and announced to the disciples: I have seen the Lord, alleluia.

Litany
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Almighty God, whose blessed Son restored Mary Magdalene to health of body and of mind, and called her to be a witness of his resurrection: Mercifully grant that by your grace we may be healed from all our infirmities and know you in the power of his unending life; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
