Laurence of Rome, Deacon and Martyr
Vespers
Antiphon 1
Laurence the martyr entered, and confessed the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.
“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”
The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.
He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Laurence the martyr entered, and confessed the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Antiphon 2
Laurence did a good work: by the sign of the cross he gave sight to the blind.
Happy are they who fear the Lord
and have great delight in his commandments!
Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches will be in their house,
and their righteousness will last for ever.
Light shines in the darkness for the upright;
the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.
It is good for them to be generous in lending
and to manage their affairs with justice.
For they will never be shaken;
the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.
They will not be afraid of any evil rumors;
their heart is right;
they put their trust in the Lord.
Their heart is established and will not shrink,
until they see their desire upon their enemies.
They have given freely to the poor,
and their righteousness stands fast for ever;
they will hold up their head with honor.
The wicked will see it and be angry;
they will gnash their teeth and pine away;
the desires of the wicked will perish.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Laurence did a good work: by the sign of the cross he gave sight to the blind.
Antiphon 3
My soul clings to you, for my flesh was burned for you, O my God.
The cords of death entangled me;
the grip of the grave took hold of me;
I came to grief and sorrow.
Then I called upon the Name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I pray you, save my life.”
Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The Lord watches over the innocent;
I was brought very low, and he helped me.
Turn again to your rest, O my soul,
for the Lord has treated you well.
For you have rescued my life from death,
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord
in the land of the living.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
My soul clings to you, for my flesh was burned for you, O my God.
Antiphon 4
Blessed Laurence prayed, saying: I thank you Lord, that I was found worthy to enter your gates.
How shall I repay the Lord
for all the good things he has done for me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his servants.
O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
In the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Blessed Laurence prayed, saying: I thank you Lord, that I was found worthy to enter your gates.
This martyr witnessed by his lips
the faith he treasured in his heart;
he shed his blood to follow Christ
and found in death the way to him.
Discerning rightly, judging well
that worldly joys and lures of sin
are fleeting pleasures swift to fall,
he came at last to heaven’s joy.
He ran with courage to the test
and valiantly endured the pain;
he shed his blood for love of you
and now enjoys eternal gifts.
And so, all gracious loving Lord,
we beg you, hear our humble prayer:
grant pardon for your servants’ sin
on this triumphant martyr’s feast.
That we may follow and attain
a glorious share in his reward
and find our joy for evermore
in heavenly dwellings with the Saints.
Eternal praise and glory be
to you, O Father, with the Son,
and with the Spirit Paraclete,
from age to age, for evermore. Amen.
Antiphon
My child, do not be afraid, for I am with you; if you pass through the fire, the flame will not hurt you, and the odor of the fire will not be on you.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
My child, do not be afraid, for I am with you; if you pass through the fire, the flame will not hurt you, and the odor of the fire will not be on you.
Litany

Kyrie eleison.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
Collect
Almighty God,
by whose grace and power your servant Laurence triumphed over suffering and despised death:
Grant that we may be steadfast in service to the poor and outcast,
and may share with him in the joys of your everlasting kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
