Saint Michael and All Angels
Vigils
Invitatory
I call aloud upon the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy hill;
I lie down and go to sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I do not fear the multitudes of people
who set themselves against me all around.
Rise up, O Lord; set me free, O my God;
surely, you will strike all my enemies across the face,
you will break the teeth of the wicked.
Deliverance belongs to the Lord.
Your blessing be upon your people!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
King and Lord of the angels: come, let us adore him.
Antiphon
King and Lord of the angels: come, let us adore him.
Saint Michael, prince of hosts above,
unconquered leader in the fight,
extend your arm and strengthen us,
and keep us in God’s holy grace.
Saint Gabriel, the messenger
of mysteries both sublime and deep,
teach us to love the ways of light,
and ever guide our straying feet.
Be present, Raphael, at our side
and lead us on to heaven’s home;
preserve our bodies and our souls
from every danger and all harm.
Bright hosts of angels, fair as light,
surround us with your powerful aid,
that we may join your company
in blessedness for evermore.
To most high Father, and the Son,
be honor, and to Paraclete,
whom your one hymn together sings
and proclaims now and evermore. Amen.
First Nocturn
Antiphon 1: Your majesty is praised above the heavens, O King of the angels.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
What is man that you should be mindful of him?
the son of man that you should seek him out?
You have made him but little lower than the angels;
you adorn him with glory and honor;
You give him mastery over the works of your hands;
you put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen,
even the wild beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.
O Lord our Governor,
how exalted is your Name in all the world!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: Your majesty is praised above the heavens, O King of the angels.
Antiphon 2: The sea was shaken and the earth trembled, where the archangel Michael descended from heaven.
For see how the wicked bend the bow
and fit their arrows to the string,
to shoot from ambush at the true of heart.
When the foundations are being destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”
The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold the inhabited world;
his piercing eye weighs our worth.
The Lord weighs the righteous as well as the wicked,
but those who delight in violence he abhors.
Upon the wicked he shall rain coals of fire and burning sulphur;
a scorching wind shall be their lot.
For the Lord is righteous;
he delights in righteous deeds;
and the just shall see his face.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: The sea was shaken and the earth trembled, where the archangel Michael descended from heaven.
Antiphon 3: The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, saying: Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.
There is no guile upon his tongue;
he does no evil to his friend;
he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor.
In his sight the wicked is rejected,
but he honors those who fear the Lord.
He has sworn to do no wrong
and does not take back his word.
He does not give his money in hope of gain,
nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
shall never be overthrown.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, saying: Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.
Antiphon 4: I am Raphael, who stand before the Lord, so now acknowledge God and write down all these things that have happened to you.
Although they have no words or language,
and their voices are not heard,
their sound has gone out into all lands,
and their message to the ends of the world.
In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun;
it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;
it rejoices like a champion to run its course.
It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens
and runs about to the end of it again;
nothing is hidden from its burning heat.
The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent.
The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever;
the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold,
sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb.
By them also is your servant enlightened,
and in keeping them there is great reward.
Who can tell how often he offends?
cleanse me from my secret faults.
Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;
let them not get dominion over me;
then shall I be whole and sound,
and innocent of a great offense.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: I am Raphael, who stand before the Lord, so now acknowledge God and write down all these things that have happened to you.
Antiphon 5: All the angels on high praise you, holy Lord, saying as one, it is right to sing hymns to you, O God.
“Who can ascend the hill of the Lord?
and who can stand in his holy place?”
“Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
“They shall receive a blessing from the Lord
and a just reward from the God of their salvation.”
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
“Who is this King of glory?”
“The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle.”
Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
“Who is he, this King of glory?”
“The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory.”
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: All the angels on high praise you, holy Lord, saying as one, it is right to sing hymns to you, O God.
Antiphon 6: I saw in the middle of the throne a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne.
Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord;
let us exalt his Name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me out of all my terror.
Look upon him and be radiant,
and let not your faces be ashamed.
I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me
and saved me from all my troubles.
The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him,
and he will deliver them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him!
Fear the Lord, you that are his saints,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger,
but those who seek the Lord lack nothing good.
Come, children, and listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who among you loves life
and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?
Keep your tongue from evil-speaking
and your lips from lying words.
Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them
and delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
Many are the troubles of the righteous,
but the Lord will deliver him out of them all.
He will keep safe all his bones;
not one of them shall be broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
The Lord ransoms the life of his servants,
and none will be punished who trust in him.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: I saw in the middle of the throne a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne.
Absolution
Lord Jesus Christ, hear the prayers of your people and have mercy on us, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessings
May the eternal Father give us an everlasting blessing. Amen.
May the only-begotten Son of God be pleased to bless us and help us. Amen.
May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and hearts. Amen.
May the Father and the Son bless us in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Readings
Second Nocturn
Antiphon 1: Behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.
You turn us back to the dust and say,
“Go back, O child of earth.”
For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past
and like a watch in the night.
You sweep us away like a dream;
we fade away suddenly like the grass.
In the morning it is green and flourishes;
in the evening it is dried up and withered.
For we consume away in your displeasure;
we are afraid because of your wrathful indignation.
Our iniquities you have set before you,
and our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
When you are angry, all our days are gone;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
The span of our life is seventy years,
perhaps in strength even eighty;
yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow,
for they pass away quickly and we are gone.
Who regards the power of your wrath?
who rightly fears your indignation?
So teach us to number our days
that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry?
be gracious to your servants.
Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning;
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us
and the years in which we suffered adversity.
Show your servants your works
and your splendor to their children.
May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us;
prosper the work of our hands;
prosper our handiwork.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: Behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.
Antiphon 2: Behold Gabriel, whom I had seen before in a vision, came to me in swift flight to teach me.
For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;
he is more to be feared than all gods.
As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols;
but it is the Lord who made the heavens.
Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence!
Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!
Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples;
ascribe to the Lord honor and power;
Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name;
bring offerings and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;
let the whole earth tremble before him.
Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King!
he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
let the sea thunder and all that is in it;
let the field be joyful and all that is therein.
Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy
before the Lord when he comes,
when he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness
and the peoples with his truth.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: Behold Gabriel, whom I had seen before in a vision, came to me in swift flight to teach me.
Antiphon 3: The angel Raphael was sent to Tobit and Sarah, to heal them.
A fire goes before him
and burns up his enemies on every side.
His lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees it and is afraid.
The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
The heavens declare his righteousness,
and all the peoples see his glory.
Confounded be all who worship carved images
and delight in false gods!
Bow down before him, all you gods.
Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O Lord.
For you are the Lord,
most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.
The Lord loves those who hate evil;
he preserves the lives of his saints
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light has sprung up for the righteous,
and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted.
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy Name.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: The angel Raphael was sent to Tobit and Sarah, to heal them.
Antiphon 4: The smoke of the incense rose before the Lord from the hand of the angel.
The Lord has made known his victory;
his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.
He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel,
and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands;
lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing.
Sing to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the voice of song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn,
shout with joy before the King, the Lord.
Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it,
the lands and those who dwell therein.
Let the rivers clap their hands,
and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord,
when he comes to judge the earth.
In righteousness shall he judge the world
and the peoples with equity.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: The smoke of the incense rose before the Lord from the hand of the angel.
Antiphon 5: He was given a great quantity of incense to offer on the golden altar that is in the sight of God.
Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome;
he is the Holy One.
“O mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.”
Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God
and fall down before his footstool;
he is the Holy One.
Moses and Aaron among his priests,
and Samuel among those who call upon his Name,
they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.
He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud;
they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.
“O Lord our God, you answered them indeed;
you were a God who forgave them,
yet punished them for their evil deeds.”
Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God
and worship him upon his holy hill;
for the Lord our God is the Holy One.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: He was given a great quantity of incense to offer on the golden altar that is in the sight of God.
Antiphon 6: Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you ministers of his who do his will, bless the Lord.
He forgives all your sins
and heals all your infirmities;
He redeems your life from the grave
and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness;
He satisfies you with good things,
and your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.
The Lord executes righteousness
and judgment for all who are oppressed.
He made his ways known to Moses
and his works to the children of Israel.
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
He will not always accuse us,
nor will he keep his anger for ever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so is his mercy great upon those who fear him.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our sins from us.
As a father cares for his children,
so does the Lord care for those who fear him.
For he himself knows whereof we are made;
he remembers that we are but dust.
Our days are like the grass;
we flourish like a flower of the field;
When the wind goes over it, it is gone,
and its place shall know it no more.
But the merciful goodness of the Lord endures for ever on those who fear him,
and his righteousness on children’s children;
On those who keep his covenant
and remember his commandments and do them.
The Lord has set his throne in heaven,
and his kingship has dominion over all.
Bless the Lord, you angels of his,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
and hearken to the voice of his word.
Bless the Lord, all you his hosts,
you ministers of his who do his will.
Bless the Lord, all you works of his,
in all places of his dominion;
bless the Lord, O my soul.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you ministers of his who do his will, bless the Lord.
Absolution
May his loving kindness and mercy help us, who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessings
May God the Father Almighty be kind and merciful to us. Amen.
May Christ give us the joy of eternal life. Amen.
May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts. Amen.
May the power of the Holy Trinity free us from all our faults and sins. Amen.

Third Nocturn
Antiphon: You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering.
For he afflicts, and he shows mercy;
he leads down to Hades in the lowest regions of the earth,
and he brings up from the great abyss,
and there is nothing that can escape his hand.
Acknowledge him before the nations, O children of Israel,
for he has scattered you among them.
He has shown you his greatness even there.
Exalt him in the presence of every living being,
because he is our Lord and he is our God;
he is our Father and he is God forever.
He will afflict you for your iniquities,
but he will again show mercy on all of you.
He will gather you from all the nations
among whom you have been scattered.
If you turn to him with all your heart and with all your soul,
to do what is true before him,
then he will turn to you
and will no longer hide his face from you.
So now see what he has done for you;
acknowledge him at the top of your voice.
Bless the Lord of righteousness,
and exalt the King of the ages.
In the land of my exile I acknowledge him,
and show his power and majesty to a nation of sinners:
“Turn back, you sinners, and do what is right before him;
perhaps he may look upon you and show you mercy.”
As for me, I exalt my God,
and my soul rejoices in the King of heaven.
Let all people speak of his majesty,
and acknowledge him in Jerusalem.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Acknowledge the Lord, for he is good,
and bless the King of the ages,
so that his tent may be rebuilt in you in joy.
May he cheer all those within you who are captives,
and love all those within you who are distressed,
to all generations forever.
A bright light will shine to all the ends of the earth;
many nations will come to you from far away,
the inhabitant of the remotest parts of the earth to your holy name,
bearing gifts in their hands for the King of heaven.
Generation after generation will give joyful praise in you,
the name of the chosen city will endure forever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Go, then, and rejoice over the children of the righteous,
for they will be gathered together
and will praise the Lord of the ages.
Happy are those who love you,
and happy are those who grieve with you
because of your afflictions;
for they will rejoice with you
and witness all your glory forever.
My soul blesses the Lord, the great King!
For Jerusalem will be built as his house for all ages.
How happy I will be if a remnant of my descendants should survive
to see your glory and acknowledge the King of heaven.
The gates of Jerusalem will be built with sapphire and emerald,
and all your walls with precious stones.
The towers of Jerusalem will be built with gold,
and their battlements with pure gold.
The streets of Jerusalem will be paved
with ruby and with stones of Ophir.
The gates of Jerusalem will sing hymns of joy,
and all her houses will cry, “Hallelujah!
Blessed be the God of Israel!
and the blessed will bless the holy name forever and ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon: You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering.
Absolution
May the almighty and merciful Lord free us from the bonds of our sins. Amen.
Blessings
May he bless us, who lives and reigns without end. Amen.
May Jesus Christ bring us to the joy of paradise. Amen.
May the divine assistance remain with us always. Amen.
May the King of the Angels bring us to the assembly of the heavenly city. Amen.

Collect
Let us pray.
Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals:
Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven,
so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
