Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Antiphon 1 We will bless the Lord.

Psalm 113 (114-115)    In exitu Israel
Alleluia!

When Israel came out of Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech,
Judah became God’s sanctuary
and Israel his dominion.

The sea beheld it and fled;
Jordan turned and went back.
The mountains skipped like rams,
and the little hills like young sheep.

What ailed you, O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned back?
You mountains that you skipped like rams?
you little hills like young sheep?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water
and flint-stone into a flowing spring.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
but to your Name give glory;
because of your love and because of your faithfulness.
Why should the heathen say,
“Where then is their God?”

Our God is in heaven;
whatever he wills to do he does.
Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.

They have mouths, but they cannot speak;
eyes have they, but they cannot see;
They have ears, but they cannot hear;
noses, but they cannot smell;

They have hands, but they cannot feel;
feet, but they cannot walk;
they make no sound with their throat.
Those who make them are like them,
and so are all who put their trust in them.

O Israel, trust in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.

The Lord has been mindful of us, and he will bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;

He will bless those who fear the Lord,
both small and great together.
May the Lord increase you more and more,
you and your children after you.

May you be blessed by the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
The heaven of heavens is the Lord’s,
but he entrusted the earth to its peoples.

The dead do not praise the Lord,
nor all those who go down into silence;
But we will bless the Lord,
from this time forth for evermore.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon We will bless the Lord.

Antiphon 2 The Lord has inclined his ear to me.

Psalm 114 (116:1-8)    Dilexi, quoniam
I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication,
because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.

The cords of death entangled me;
the grip of the grave took hold of me;
I came to grief and sorrow.
Then I called upon the Name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I pray you, save my life.”

Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The Lord watches over the innocent;
I was brought very low, and he helped me.

Turn again to your rest, O my soul,
for the Lord has treated you well.
For you have rescued my life from death,
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord
in the land of the living.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord has inclined his ear to me.

Antiphon 3 I believed, even when I spoke.

Psalm 115 (116:9-17)    Credidi, propter quod
I believed, even when I said,
“I have been brought very low.”
In my distress I said, “No one can be trusted.”

How shall I repay the Lord
for all the good things he has done for me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the Name of the Lord.

I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his servants.

O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the Name of the Lord.

I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
In the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Alleluia!

Psalm 116 (117)    Laudate Dominum
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
laud him, all you peoples.

For his loving-kindness toward us is great,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon I believed, even when I spoke.

Antiphon 4 Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth.

Psalm 128 (129)    Saepe expugnaverunt
“Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth,”
let Israel now say;
“Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth,
but they have not prevailed against me.”

The plowmen plowed upon my back
and made their furrows long.
The Lord, the Righteous One,
has cut the cords of the wicked.

Let them be put to shame and thrown back,
all those who are enemies of Zion.
Let them be like grass upon the housetops,
which withers before it can be plucked;

Which does not fill the hand of the reaper,
nor the bosom of him who binds the sheaves;
So that those who go by say not so much as,
“The Lord prosper you.
We wish you well in the Name of the Lord.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth.

Short Lesson: 1 Peter 5:1-4
Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it - not for sordid gain, but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away.

Responsory
This is one who loves his brothers, who prays much for the people.
This is one who loves his brothers, who prays much for the people.
And who handed over his life for his brothers, who prays much for the people.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
This is one who loves his brothers, who prays much for the people.

Hymn     Iste confessor Domini sacratus
He whose confession God of old accepted,
whom through the ages all now hold in honor,
gaining his guerdon this day came to enter
heaven’s high portal.

God-fearing, watchful, pure of mind and body,
holy and humble, thus did all men find him,
while through his members, to the life immortal
mortal life called him.

Thus to the weary, from the life enshrined,
potent in virtue, flowed humane compassion;
sick and sore laden, howsoever burdened,
there they found healing.

So now in chorus, giving God the glory,
raise we our anthem gladly to his honor,
that in fair kinship we may all be sharers
here and hereafter.

Honor and glory, power and salvation,
be in the highest unto him who reigns
changeless in heaven over earthly changes,
Triune, eternal. Amen.

Verse
The Lord loved him and adorned him.
He dressed him in a robe of glory.

Antiphon Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, says the Lord.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, says the Lord.

Litany

Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
  your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Holy God, who endowed your servant Hugh of Lincoln with wise and cheerful boldness, and taught him to commend the discipline of holy life to kings and princes: Grant that we also, rejoicing in the Good News of your mercy, and fearing nothing but the loss of you, may be bold to speak the truth in love, in the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
