The Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Vespers

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Antiphon 1 I saw her as beautiful as a dove, and she was surrounded by rose flowers and lilies of the valley.

Psalm 109 (110)    Dixit Dominus
The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.

“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”

The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.

He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.

He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon I saw her as beautiful as a dove, and she was surrounded by rose flowers and lilies of the valley.

Antiphon 2 Your fragrance, O holy Mother of God, is like the fragrance of balsam; as a lily will blossom the Virgin Mother of God.

Psalm 112 (113)    Laudate, pueri
Alleluia!

Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.
Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?

He takes up the weak out of the dust
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
He sets them with the princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the woman of a childless house
to be a joyful mother of children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Your fragrance, O holy Mother of God, is like the fragrance of balsam; as a lily will blossom the Virgin Mother of God.

Antiphon 3 Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women, alleluia.

Psalm 121 (122)    Laetatus sum
I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city
that is at unity with itself;

To which the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord,
the assembly of Israel,
to praise the Name of the Lord.

For there are the thrones of judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls
and quietness within your towers.

“For my brethren and companions’ sake,
I pray for your prosperity.
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek to do you good.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women, alleluia.

Antiphon 4 O Virgin Mary, there is none like you born in the world among women: you blossom like a rose, your scent is like a lily; pray for us to your Son.

Psalm 126 (127)    Nisi Dominus
Unless the Lord builds the house,
their labor is in vain who build it.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
in vain the watchman keeps his vigil.

It is in vain that you rise so early and go to bed so late;
vain, too, to eat the bread of toil,
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
and the fruit of the womb is a gift.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.

Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them!
he shall not be put to shame
when he contends with his enemies in the gate.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon O Virgin Mary, there is none like you born in the world among women: you blossom like a rose, your scent is like a lily; pray for us to your Son.

Short Lesson: Romans 5:20-21
Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that just as sin exercised dominion in death, so grace might also exercise dominion through justification leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Responsory
By this I know that you are pleased with me.
By this I know that you are pleased with me.
That my enemy does not triumph over me, that you are pleased with me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
By this I know that you are pleased with me.

Hymn     Ave, maris stella
Hail, O star of ocean
God's own loving mother,
yet a virgin always,
blessed gate of heaven.

Heeding that great “Ave”
from the mouth of Gabriel,
in your peace confirm us,
Eva’s name transforming.

Break the bonds of sinners,
bring light to our blindness,
drive away our evil,
beg for us all blessings.

Show yourself our mother:
pray that he may heed us,
who for our salvation
deigned to be your offspring.

Peerless holy Virgin,
meek beyond all others,
free us from our failings,
make us chaste and humble.

Keep us pure and faithful,
guard us on life’s journey,
that on seeing Jesus
we rejoice for ever.

Praise to God the Father,
glory to Christ Jesus
and the Holy Spirit:
to all three one honor. Amen.

Verse
Today is the immaculate conception of the holy Virgin Mary.
Who crushed the serpent’s head with her virgin foot.

Antiphon Today comes forth the root from the stump of Jesse, today Mary was conceived without any trace of sin, today the head of the ancient serpent was crushed by her, alleluia.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Today comes forth the root from the stump of Jesse, today Mary was conceived without any trace of sin, today the head of the ancient serpent was crushed by her, alleluia.

Litany
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, who raised fallen humanity through the child-bearing of the Blessed Virgin Mary: grant that we who have seen your glory revealed in our human nature may daily be renewed in your image; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, on God, now and for ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
