Of the Dead
Vespers

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Antiphon 1 I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

Psalm 114 (116:1-8)    Dilexi, quoniam
I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication,
because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.

The cords of death entangled me;
the grip of the grave took hold of me;
I came to grief and sorrow.
Then I called upon the Name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I pray you, save my life.”

Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The Lord watches over the innocent;
I was brought very low, and he helped me.

Turn again to your rest, O my soul,
for the Lord has treated you well.
For you have rescued my life from death,
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord
in the land of the living.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

Antiphon 2 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; it is he who shall keep you safe.

Psalm 120 (121)    Levavi oculos
I lift up my eyes to the hills;
from where is my help to come?
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved
and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.
Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel
shall neither slumber nor sleep;

The Lord himself watches over you;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand,
So that the sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
it is he who shall keep you safe.
The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in,
from this time forth for evermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; it is he who shall keep you safe.

Antiphon 3 If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand?

Psalm 129 (130)    De profundis
Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?
For there is forgiveness with you;
therefore you shall be feared.

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him;
in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord,
more than watchmen for the morning
more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, wait for the Lord,
for with the Lord there is mercy;
With him there is plenteous redemption,
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand?

Antiphon 4 Do not abandon, O Lord, the works of your hands.

Psalm 137 (138)    Confitebor tibi
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods I will sing your praise;
I will bow down toward your holy temple
and praise your Name,
because of your love and faithfulness.

For you have glorified your Name
and your word above all things.
When I called, you answered me;
you increased my strength within me.

All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord,
when they have heard the words of your mouth.
They will sing of the ways of the Lord,
that great is the glory of the Lord.

Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly;
he perceives the haughty from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe;
you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies;
your right hand shall save me.

The Lord will make good his purpose for me;
O Lord, your love endures for ever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Do not abandon, O Lord, the works of your hands.

Short Lesson: 1 Corithians 15:55-57
Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, whe gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Responsory
In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed.
In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed.
I will rejoice and be glad because of your mercy; let me never be ashamed.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed.

Hymn     Immensae rex potentiae
O Christ, the King of wondrous power,
you broke the sharpened spear of death
to glorify the Father’s name
and bring to us full blessedness.

Assuming our infirmities,
you sought the great and bloody duel:
victorious in your death, you crushed
the death by which the serpent reigned.

You rose with power from the tomb
and by your Paschal Mystery
you ever bring us life anew
who once were lost and dead in sin.

Bestow on us the life of grace,
that when as Bridegroom you return,
you find us with our lamps well trimmed,
prepared and fit for heaven’s feast.

With peace and kindness, Christ our Judge,
receive into your light and rest
those bound by charity and faith
to the most holy Trinity.

Now bid your servants come to you,
whose soul is freed from bonds of flesh,
to marvel at the Father’s reign
and sing your praise for evermore. Amen.

Verse
I heard a voice from heaven saying.
Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.

Antiphon Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away.

Kyrie eleison.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
  your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served you here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
