The First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ
None

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Hymn     Rerum Deus tenax vigor
O God, our firm and steadfast strength,
remaining in yourself unmoved,
you rule the span of daily light
and guide the course of all the hours.

Bestow at eventide a light
by which our life may never fail,
and grant the glory without end
that follows on a holy death.

Most loving Father, hear our prayer,
and you, O Christ co-equal Son,
who with the Spirit Paraclete
now reign through all eternity. Amen.

Antiphon The Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, the Beloved, alleluia.

Psalm 118.11 (119:81-88) Kaph    Defecit in salutare
My soul has longed for your salvation;
I have put my hope in your word.
My eyes have failed from watching for your promise,
and I say, “When will you comfort me?”

I have become like a leather flask in the smoke,
but I have not forgotten your statutes.
How much longer must I wait?
when will you give judgment against those who persecute me?

The proud have dug pits for me;
they do not keep your law.
All your commandments are true;
help me, for they persecute me with lies.

They had almost made an end of me on earth,
but I have not forsaken your commandments.
In your loving-kindness, revive me,
that I may keep the decrees of your mouth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 118.12 (119:89-96) Lamedh    In aeternum, Domine
O Lord, your word is everlasting;
it stands firm in the heavens.
Your faithfulness remains from one generation to another;
you established the earth, and it abides.

By your decree these continue to this day,
for all things are your servants.
If my delight had not been in your law,
I should have perished in my affliction.

I will never forget your commandments,
because by them you give me life.
I am yours; oh, that you would save me!
for I study your commandments.

Though the wicked lie in wait for me to destroy me,
I will apply my mind to your decrees.
I see that all things come to an end,
but your commandment has no bounds.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 118.13 (119:97-104) Mem    Quomodo dilexi!
Oh, how I love your law!
all the day long it is in my mind.
Your commandment has made me wiser than my enemies,
and it is always with me.

I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your decrees are my study.
I am wiser than the elders,
because I observe your commandments.

I restrain my feet from every evil way,
that I may keep your word.
I do not shrink from your judgments,
because you yourself have taught me.

How sweet are your words to my taste!
they are sweeter than honey to my mouth.
Through your commandments I gain understanding;
therefore I hate every lying way.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, the Beloved, alleluia.

Short Lesson: Isaiah 49:6
The Lord said to me, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Verse
I will put my Spirit upon him.
And he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

Collect
Let us pray.
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who lives and reigns, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
