The Annunciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Vespers

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon 1 The angel of the Lord announced unto Mary, and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 109 (110)    Dixit Dominus
The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.

“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”

The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.

He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.

He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The angel of the Lord announced unto Mary, and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Antiphon 2 Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God: and now, you will conceive and bear a son.

Psalm 110 (111)    Confitebor tibi
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the deeds of the Lord!
they are studied by all who delight in them.

His work is full of majesty and splendor,
and his righteousness endures for ever.
He makes his marvelous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.

He gives food to those who fear him;
he is ever mindful of his covenant.
He has shown his people the power of his works
in giving them the lands of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice;
all his commandments are sure.
They stand fast for ever and ever,
because they are done in truth and equity.

He sent redemption to his people;
he commanded his covenant for ever;
holy and awesome is his Name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
those who act accordingly have a good understanding;
his praise endures for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God: and now, you will conceive and bear a son.

Antiphon 3 Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it unto me according to your word.

Psalm 129 (130)    De profundis
Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?
For there is forgiveness with you;
therefore you shall be feared.

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him;
in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord,
more than watchmen for the morning
more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, wait for the Lord,
for with the Lord there is mercy;
With him there is plenteous redemption,
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it unto me according to your word.

Antiphon 4 A virgin conceived the word, a virgin she remained, a virgin brought forth the King of all kings.

Psalm 131 (132)    Memento, Domine
Lord, remember David,
and all the hardships he endured;
How he swore an oath to the Lord
and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

“I will not come under the roof of my house,
nor climb up into my bed;
I will not allow my eyes to sleep,
nor let my eyelids slumber;
Until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

“The ark! We heard it was in Ephratah;
we found it in the fields of Jearim.
Let us go to God’s dwelling place;
let us fall upon our knees before his footstool.”

Arise, O Lord, into your resting-place,
you and the ark of your strength.
Let your priests be clothed with righteousness;
let your faithful people sing with joy.
For your servant David’s sake,
do not turn away the face of your Anointed.

The Lord has sworn an oath to David;
in truth, he will not break it:
“A son, the fruit of your body
will I set upon your throne.

“If your children keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their children will sit upon your throne for evermore.”

For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired her for his habitation:
“This shall be my resting-place for ever;
here will I dwell, for I delight in her.

“I will surely bless her provisions,
and satisfy her poor with bread.
I will clothe her priests with salvation,
and her faithful people will rejoice and sing.

“There will I make the horn of David flourish;
I have prepared a lamp for my Anointed.
As for his enemies, I will clothe them with shame;
but as for him, his crown will shine.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon A virgin conceived the word, a virgin she remained, a virgin brought forth the King of all kings.

Short Lesson: 1 John 1:1-2
We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - this life was revealed and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

Responsory
The Word became flesh, and lived among us.
The Word became flesh, and lived among us.
He was in the beginning with God, and lived among us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
The Word became flesh, and lived among us.

Hymn     Ave, maris stella
Hail, O star of ocean
God's own loving mother,
yet a virgin always,
blessed gate of heaven.

Heeding that great “Ave”
from the mouth of Gabriel,
in your peace confirm us,
Eva’s name transforming.

Break the bonds of sinners,
bring light to our blindness,
drive away our evil,
beg for us all blessings.

Show yourself our mother:
pray that he may heed us,
who for our salvation
deigned to be your offspring.

Peerless holy Virgin,
meek beyond all others,
free us from our failings,
make us chaste and humble.

Keep us pure and faithful,
guard us on life’s journey,
that on seeing Jesus
we rejoice for ever.

Praise to God the Father,
glory to Christ Jesus
and the Holy Spirit:
to all three one honor. Amen.

Verse
Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with you.

Antiphon The angel Gabriel spoke to Mary, saying: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The angel Gabriel spoke to Mary, saying: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
  your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Pour your grace into our hearts, O Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
