The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday
First Vespers

Introduction
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Antiphon 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place, saying alleluia.

Psalm 112 (113)    Laudate, pueri
Alleluia!

Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.
Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?

He takes up the weak out of the dust
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
He sets them with the princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the woman of a childless house
to be a joyful mother of children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place, saying alleluia.

Antiphon 2 The Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, alleluia.

Psalm 116 (117)    Laudate Dominum
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
laud him, all you peoples.

For his loving-kindness toward us is great,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, alleluia.

Antiphon 3 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak, alleluia.

Psalm 146 (147:1-12)    Laudate Dominum
Alleluia!

How good it is to sing praises to our God!
how pleasant it is to honor him with praise!

The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem;
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars
and calls them all by their names.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
there is no limit to his wisdom.
The Lord lifts up the lowly,
but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make music to our God upon the harp.

He covers the heavens with clouds
and prepares rain for the earth;
He makes grass to grow upon the mountains
and green plants to serve mankind.
He provides food for flocks and herds
and for the young ravens when they cry.

He is not impressed by the might of a horse;
he has no pleasure in the strength of a man;
But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who await his gracious favor.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak, alleluia.

Antiphon 4 In various languages the Apostles spoke the great things of God, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Psalm 147 (147:13-21)    Lauda, Jerusalem
Worship the Lord, O Jerusalem;
praise your God, O Zion;
For he has strengthened the bars of your gates;
he has blessed your children within you.
He has established peace on your borders;
he satisfies you with the finest wheat.

He sends out his command to the earth,
and his word runs very swiftly.
He gives snow like wool;
he scatters hoarfrost like ashes.

He scatters his hail like bread crumbs;
who can stand against his cold?
He sends forth his word and melts them;
he blows with his wind, and the waters flow.

He declares his word to Jacob,
his statutes and his judgments to Israel.
He has not done so to any other nation;
to them he has not revealed his judgments.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon In various languages the Apostles spoke the great things of God, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Short Lesson: Romans 8:11
If the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Responsory
The Spirit, the Paraclete, alleluia, alleluia.
Will teach you everything, alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Hymn     Veni creator Spiritus
Come, O Creator Spirit blest,
come visit souls that are your own;
fill all the hearts that you have made
with grace and blessing from on high.

You who are called the Paraclete,
the holy gift of God most High,
the living wellspring, love and fire,
the soul’s anointing from above.

In graces you are sevenfold,
the Finger of God’s strong right hand,
and you, the Father’s promised one,
adorning tongues with gracious speech.

Come fill our senses with your light,
pour forth your love into our hearts,
the weakness of our mortal frame
make strong with power that never fails.

Drive far from us our deadly foe,
and swiftly grant us lasting peace;
with you to guide and lead the way,
may we avoid all harm and sin.

Now through your presence may we know
and love the Father and the Son;
and you, the Spirit of them both,
may we profess throughout all time. Amen.

Verse
Send forth your Spirit, and they are created, alleluia.
And so you renew the face of the earth, alleluia.

Antiphon Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle the fire of your love in them: you who through the diversity of all the languages, united the nations in unity of faith, alleluia, alleluia.

Canticle: Luke 1:46-55    Magnificat anima mea
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle the fire of your love in them: you who through the diversity of all the languages, united the nations in unity of faith, alleluia, alleluia.

Litany
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
  your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Collect
Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
