Vigils

Invitatory

Introduction
Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Psalm 3    Domine, quid multiplicati
Lord, how many adversaries I have!
how many there are who rise up against me!
how many there are who say of me,
“There is no help for him in his God.”
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me;
you are my glory, the one who lifts up my head.

I call aloud upon the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy hill;
I lie down and go to sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I do not fear the multitudes of people
who set themselves against me all around.

Rise up, O Lord; set me free, O my God;
surely, you will strike all my enemies across the face,
you will break the teeth of the wicked.
Deliverance belongs to the Lord.
Your blessing be upon your people!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Hymn     Sacris sollemniis iuncta sint gaudia
Let our joys magnify sacred solemnities,
praises re-echoing from the heart’s hidden depth,
let the old pass away, all things be new again,
hearts and voices and every work.

Christ on that blessed night, at his last Paschal Meal,
gave his disciples there, as we recall in faith,
lamb and unleavened bread, food by the Law bestowed
on our fathers of ancient days.

Then for the frail and weak he gave his Flesh as food,
and for the sorrowful he gave his Blood as drink,
saying, “Receive this cup, which I hand on to you;
take this, all of you, drink from it.”

Christ instituted thus this very sacrifice,
granting to Priests alone power to offer it
by his will and his charge making them fit to act,
to receive and to others give.

Bread of the angels hosts now is made bread for us,
heavenly bread from God, truth of all prophecies,
O marvel, wondrous gift! Who now may eat the Lord?
Lowly servants and poor of heart.

O Godhead, Three and One, hear us, we beg of you:
as we adore you, Lord, so come and visity us,
lead us along your paths, where our hearts long to go
to that light where you live and reign. Amen.

First Nocturn

Antiphon 1 The Lord gave the taste of the fruit of salvation at the time of his death.

Psalm 1    Beatus vir qui non abiit
Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked,
nor lingered in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the seats of the scornful!
Their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and they meditate on his law day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither;
everything they do shall prosper.

It is not so with the wicked;
they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord gave the taste of the fruit of salvation at the time of his death.

Antiphon 2 When grain and wine increase, the faithful rest in the peace of Christ.

Psalm 4    Cum invocarem
Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause;
you set me free when I am hard-pressed;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

“You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory;
how long will you worship dumb idols
and run after false gods?”

Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful;
when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.

Tremble, then, and do not sin;
speak to your heart in silence upon your bed.
Offer the appointed sacrifices
and put your trust in the Lord.

Many are saying,
“Oh, that we might see better times!”
Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O Lord.

You have put gladness in my heart,
more than when grain and wine and oil increase.

I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep;
for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon When grain and wine increase, the faithful rest in the peace of Christ.

Antiphon 3 By the communion of the cup, in which God himself is received, and not by the blood of calves, has the Lord gathered us.

Psalm 15 (16)    Conserva me, Domine
Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you;
I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord,
my good above all other.”

All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land,
upon those who are noble among the people.
But those who run after other gods
shall have their troubles multiplied.
Their libations of blood I will not offer,
nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.

O Lord, you are my portion and my cup;
it is you who uphold my lot.
My boundaries enclose a pleasant land;
indeed, I have a goodly heritage.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
my heart teaches me, night after night.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.

My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices;
my body also shall rest in hope.
For you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor let your holy one see the Pit.

You will show me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy,
and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon By the communion of the cup, in which God himself is received, and not by the blood of calves, has the Lord gathered us.

Antiphon 4 May the Lord remember our offerings and accept our sacrifice.

Psalm 19 (20)    Exaudiat te Dominus
May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble,
the Name of the God of Jacob defend you;
send you help from his holy place
and strengthen you out of Zion;

Remember all your offerings
and accept your sacrifice;
grant you your heart’s desire
and prosper all your plans.

We will shout for joy at your victory
and triumph in the Name of our God;
may the Lord grant all your requests.

Now I know that the Lord gives victory to his anointed;
he will answer him out of his holy heaven,
with the victorious strength of his right hand.

Some put their trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we will call upon the Name of the Lord our God.
They collapse and fall down,
but we will arise and stand upright.
O Lord, give victory to the king
and answer us when we call.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon May the Lord remember our offerings and accept our sacrifice.

Antiphon 5 The table of the Lord is spread for us, in the presence of those who trouble us.

Psalm 22 (23)    Dominus regit me
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures
and leads me beside still waters.

He revives my soul
and guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake.
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I shall fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me;
you have anointed my head with oil,
and my cup is running over.

Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The table of the Lord is spread for us, in the presence of those who trouble us.

Antiphon 6 With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, the sound of feasting resounds at the table of the Lord.

Psalm 41 (42)    Quemadmodum
As the deer longs for the water-brooks,
so longs my soul for you, O God.

My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God;
when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?

My tears have been my food day and night,
while all day long they say to me,
“Where now is your God?”

I pour out my soul when I think on these things:
how I went with the multitude and led them into the house of God,
with the voice of praise and thanksgiving,
among those who keep holy-day.

Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?
and why are you so disquieted within me?
Put your trust in God;
for I will yet give thanks to him,
who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

My soul is heavy within me;
therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan
and from the peak of Mizar among the heights of Hermon.

One deep calls to another in the noise of your cataracts;
all your rapids and floods have gone over me.

The Lord grants his loving-kindness in the daytime;
in the night season his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to the God of my strength,
“Why have you forgotten me?
and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?”

While my bones are being broken,
my enemies mock me to my face;
All day long they mock me
and say to me, “Where now is your God?”

Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?
and why are you so disquieted within me?
Put your trust in God;
for I will yet give thanks to him,
who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, the sound of feasting resounds at the table of the Lord.

Verse
There is one bread, and we who are many are one body, alleluia.
For we all partake of the one bread and the one cup, alleluia.

Absolution Lord Jesus Christ, hear the prayers of your people and have mercy on us, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessings

May the eternal Father give us an everlasting blessing. Amen.
May the only-begotten Son of God be pleased to bless us and help us. Amen.
May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and hearts. Amen.
May the Father and the Son bless us in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Second Nocturn

Antiphon 1 I will go to the altar of God; I will take Christ who restores my youth.

Psalm 42 (43)    Judica me, Deus
Give judgment for me, O God,
and defend my cause against an ungodly people;
deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked.

For you are the God of my strength;
why have you put me from you?
and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?

Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me,
and bring me to your holy hill,
and to your dwelling;

That I may go to the altar of God,
to the God of my joy and gladness;
and on the harp I will give thanks to you, O God my God.

Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?
and why are you so disquieted within me?
Put your trust in God;
for I will yet give thanks to him,
who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon I will go to the altar of God; I will take Christ who restores my youth.

Antiphon 2 The Lord feeds us with the finest wheat, and satisfies us with honey from the rock.

Psalm 80 (81)    Exultate Deo
Sing with joy to God our strength
and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob.
Raise a song and sound the timbrel,
the merry harp, and the lyre.
Blow the ram’s-horn at the new moon,
and at the full moon, the day of our feast.

For this is a statute for Israel,
a law of the God of Jacob.
He laid it as a solemn charge upon Joseph,
when he came out of the land of Egypt.

I heard an unfamiliar voice saying,
“I eased his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were set free from bearing the load.”
You called on me in trouble, and I saved you.
I answered you from the secret place of thunder
and tested you at the waters of Meribah.

Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you:
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not worship a foreign god.

I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said,
“Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”

And yet my people did not hear my voice,
and Israel would not obey me.
So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their hearts,
to follow their own devices.

Oh, that my people would listen to me!
that Israel would walk in my ways!
I should soon subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.

Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,
and their punishment would last for ever.
But Israel would I feed with the finest wheat
and satisfy him with honey from the rock.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord feeds us with the finest wheat, and satisfies us with honey from the rock.

Antiphon 3 We have taken Christ from your altar, O Lord, in whom our heart and our flesh rejoice.

Psalm 83 (84)    Quam dilecta!
How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts!
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

The sparrow has found her a house
and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young;
by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.

Happy are they who dwell in your house!
they will always be praising you.
Happy are the people whose strength is in you!
whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way.

Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs,
for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
They will climb from height to height,
and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.

Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
hearken, O God of Jacob.
Behold our defender, O God;
and look upon the face of your Anointed.

For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room,
and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God
than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.

For the Lord God is both sun and shield;
he will give grace and glory;
No good thing will the Lord withhold
from those who walk with integrity.
O Lord of hosts,
happy are they who put their trust in you!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon We have taken Christ from your altar, O Lord, in whom our heart and our flesh rejoice.

Antiphon 4 The Lord has made prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.

Psalm 84 (85)    Benedixisti, Domine
You have been gracious to your land, O Lord,
you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of your people
and blotted out all their sins.
You have withdrawn all your fury
and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation.

Restore us then, O God our Savior;
let your anger depart from us.
Will you be displeased with us for ever?
will you prolong your anger from age to age?
Will you not give us life again,
that your people may rejoice in you?

Show us your mercy, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
I will listen to what the Lord God is saying,
for he is speaking peace to his faithful people
and to those who turn their hearts to him.

Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth have met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Truth shall spring up from the earth,
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

The Lord will indeed grant prosperity,
and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness shall go before him,
and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord has made prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.

Antiphon 5 Christ the Lord remembers those who know him, he has sustained them with grain and wine.

Psalm 86 (87)    Fundamenta ejus
On the holy mountain stands the city he has founded;
the Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of our God.

I count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me;
behold Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia:
in Zion were they born.
Of Zion it shall be said, “Everyone was born in her.
and the Most High himself shall sustain her.”

The Lord will record as he enrolls the peoples,
“These also were born there.”
The singers and the dancers will say,
“All my fresh springs are in you.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon Christ the Lord remembers those who know him, he has sustained them with grain and wine.

Antiphon 6 The Lord is great in Zion; Moses and Aaron among his priests.

Psalm 98 (99)    Dominus regnavit
The Lord is King;
let the people tremble;
he is enthroned upon the cherubim;
let the earth shake.
The Lord is great in Zion;
he is high above all peoples.

Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome;
he is the Holy One.
“O mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.”

Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God
and fall down before his footstool;
he is the Holy One.

Moses and Aaron among his priests,
and Samuel among those who call upon his Name,
they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.

He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud;
they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.

“O Lord our God, you answered them indeed;
you were a God who forgave them,
yet punished them for their evil deeds.”

Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God
and worship him upon his holy hill;
for the Lord our God is the Holy One.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon The Lord is great in Zion; Moses and Aaron among his priests.

Verse
Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink, alleluia.
And drink from the eternal spring, alleluia.

Absolution May his loving kindness and mercy help us, who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessings

May God the Father Almighty be kind and merciful to us. Amen.
May Christ give us the joy of eternal life. Amen.
May God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts. Amen.
May the power of the Holy Trinity free us from all our faults and sins. Amen.

Third Nocturn

Antiphon My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink; those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, says the Lord.

Canticle: Proverbs 9:1-12    Sapientia aedificavit
Wisdom has built her house,
she has hewn her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine,
she has also set her table.

She has sent out her servant girls, she calls
from the highest places in the town,
“You that are simple, turn in here!”
To those without sense she says,
“Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
Lay aside immaturity, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”

Whoever corrects a scoffer wins abuse;
whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt.
A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you;
the wise, when rebuked, will love you.
Give instruction to the wise and they will become wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will gain in learning.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
For by me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Canticle: Jeremiah 31:10-14    Audite verbum gentes
Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, “He who scattered Israel will gather him,
and will keep him as a shepherd a flock.”

For the Lord has ransomed Jacob,
and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.

They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord,
over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and over the young of the flock and the herd;
their life shall become like a watered garden,
and they shall never languish again.

Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
and the young men and the old shall be merry.
I will turn their mourning into joy,
I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
I will give the priests their fill of fatness,
and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty, says the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Canticle: Wisdom 16:20-21, 26; 17:1    Angelorum esca nutrivisti
You gave your people food of angels,
and without their toil you supplied them from heaven with bread ready to eat,
providing every pleasure and suited to every taste.

For your sustenance manifested your sweetness toward your children;
and the bread, ministering to the desire of the one who took it,
was changed to suit everyone’s liking.

So that your children, whom you loved, O Lord, might learn
that it is not the production of crops that feeds humankind
but that your word sustains those who trust in you.

Great are your judgments and hard to describe;
therefore uninstructed souls have gone astray.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Antiphon My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink; those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, says the Lord.

Verse
Our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed, alleluia.
Therefore let us celebrate with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, alleluia.

Absolution May the almighty and merciful Lord free us from the bonds of our sins. Amen.

Blessings

May he bless us, who lives and reigns without end. Amen.
May Jesus Christ bring us to the joy of paradise. Amen.
May the divine assistance remain with us always. Amen.
May the King of the Angels bring us to the assembly of the heavenly city. Amen.
