Saint Luke the Evangelist
Vespers
Antiphon 1
Of this gospel I have become a servant by the working of the power of God.
The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.
“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”
The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.
He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Of this gospel I have become a servant by the working of the power of God.
Antiphon 2
These men are holy and friends of God, by whose doctrine the Church shines.
Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.
Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?
He takes up the weak out of the dust
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
He sets them with the princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the woman of a childless house
to be a joyful mother of children.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
These men are holy and friends of God, by whose doctrine the Church shines.
Antiphon 3
Many will praise their understanding; it will never be blotted out.
How shall I repay the Lord
for all the good things he has done for me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his servants.
O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
In the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Many will praise their understanding; it will never be blotted out.
Antiphon 4
The seed is the word of God, and the sower is Christ: everyone who listens to him will remain forever.
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are glad indeed.
Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses of the Negev.
Those who sowed with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed,
will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
The seed is the word of God, and the sower is Christ: everyone who listens to him will remain forever.
O righteous judges of the age,
true lights sent forth to all the world,
we raise our hearts in fervent prayer;
with kindness hear our humble plea.
By word you bar the gate of heaven,
by word you draw and loose the bolt;
by your command, we beg of you,
release us from the power of sin.
The health and weakness of us all
is subject to your gracious care:
restore our virtue and our strength
and heal the sick in mind and heart.
That when the end of time has come
and Christ our Lord shall sit as judge,
then he may grant us all to share
in lasting joy for evermore.
All praise and glory be to God,
for he has granted us through you
to be conformed to Gospel truths
and seek the heavenly things above. Amen.
Antiphon
Look! On the mountains the feet of one who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace!
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
Look! On the mountains the feet of one who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace!
Litany
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
Collect
Almighty God, who inspired your servant Luke the physician to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son:
Graciously continue in your Church this love and power to heal,
to the praise and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
