Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles
Vespers
Antiphon 1
The Lord has sworn and he will not recant: You are a priest for ever.
The Lord will send the scepter of your power out of Zion,
saying, “Rule over your enemies round about you.
“Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth;
in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you,
like dew from the womb of the morning.”
The Lord has sworn and he will not recant:
“You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord who is at your right hand
will smite kings in the day of his wrath;
he will rule over the nations.
He will heap high the corpses;
he will smash heads over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook beside the road;
therefore he will lift high his head.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
The Lord has sworn and he will not recant: You are a priest for ever.
Antiphon 2
The Lord sets them with the princes of his people.
Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.
Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?
He takes up the weak out of the dust
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
He sets them with the princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the woman of a childless house
to be a joyful mother of children.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
The Lord sets them with the princes of his people.
Antiphon 3
You have freed me, O Lord, from my bonds; I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving.
How shall I repay the Lord
for all the good things he has done for me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his servants.
O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
In the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
You have freed me, O Lord, from my bonds; I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving.
Antiphon 4
How deep I find your thoughts, O God; how great is the sum of them!
Indeed, there is not a word on my lips,
but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
You press upon me behind and before
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is so high that I cannot attain to it.
Where can I go from your Spirit?
where can I flee from your presence?
If I climb up to heaven, you are there;
if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there your hand will lead me
and your right hand hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me,
and the light around me turn to night,”
Darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day;
darkness and light to you are both alike.
For you yourself created my inmost parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will thank you because I am marvelously made;
your works are wonderful, and I know it well.
My body was not hidden from you,
while I was being made in secret
and woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb;
all of them were written in your book;
they were fashioned day by day,
when as yet there was none of them.
How deep I find your thoughts, O God!
how great is the sum of them!
If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.
Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God!
You that thirst for blood, depart from me.
They speak despitefully against you;
your enemies take your Name in vain.
Do I not hate those, O Lord, who hate you?
and do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
I hate them with a perfect hatred;
they have become my own enemies.
Search me out, O God, and know my heart;
try me and know my restless thoughts.
Look well whether there be any wickedness in me
and lead me in the way that is everlasting.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon
How deep I find your thoughts, O God; how great is the sum of them!
We ask you therefore, glorious in martyrdom,
O Peter blessed, Paul the lily of the world,
celestial courtiers and triumphant warriors:
By your entreaties kindly shelter us from all
evil assaults and carry us beyond the sky.
Glory be to the Father through boundless ages;
to the Begotten, dignity be yours and rule,
honor, and power, and to the Holy Spirit;
to the Trinity be wealth without division
through infinities of ages upon ages. Amen.
Antiphon
Today Simon Peter ascended the beam of the cross, alleluia, today the keyholder of the kingdom went rejoicing to Christ: today Paul the Apostle, light of the whole world, bent his head, and for the name of Christ, was crowned with martyrdom, alleluia.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.

Litany

Kyrie eleison.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
Collect
Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their martyrdom:
Grant that your Church, instructed by their teaching and example,
and knit together in unity by your Spirit,
may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Conclusion
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
